Chapter 10
Dressed in mourning black, Dementia stepped into the ducal opera
box. She smiled at the duke when he assisted her into the chair and
then sat beside her.
Her gaze drifted from the man at her side to the other opera-goers.
Every aristocratic countenance swiveled in their direction. Every
bejeweled lorgnette aimed at the duke and her.
“I want to see you draped in diamonds and nothing else,” the Duke of
Charming whispered against her ear. “I yearn to kiss your sweet flesh.”
“The Bradford bitch lied,” Prosecutor Lowing growled. “I can feel it in my bones.”
“I gave you my professional opinion,” Amadeus Black reminded him, “but you would not be
dissuaded from proceeding.”
The two men sat in the prosecutor’s office located in the Central Criminal Court Building. Stacks of
books and documents cramped the small office, and a thin layer of dust coated bookcase shelves. The
window was opened only a crack to prevent unhealthy fevers wafting through the air into the room from
disease-infected prisoners.
“I found the prince and the countess breakfasting together that morning,” Amadeus continued.
“I had heard rumors about the late earl, and the countess seeking solace in another man’s arms is
highly likely.”
“Regina Bradford is hiding something,” Lowing said, ignoring the other man’s opinion.
“Are you making this case personal against the countess?” Amadeus cocked brow at the man. “I
cannot believe a man with your calibre of talent would do that.”
“I do not begrudge the Countess of Langley, nor do I have any personal feelings about her.”
Amadeus could not control his smile. “She did make you appear less than reasonable while she won
the hearts and minds of the gallery and the bench.”
Lowing ignored that remark. He appeared insulted by being upstaged by a merchant’s daughter. And
Percy Howell, the prosecutor’s own nemesis.
“My mistake was placing the prince at the crime scene. A wealthy man would hire others to do the
bloody deed.” A cold smile touched the prosecutor’s lips. “I want you to investigate the possibility of a
conspiracy between the prince and the countess.”
“That would be a waste of my time,” Amadeus said. “Conspiracy is difficult to prove; besides, I do
not believe those two conspired to kill their spouses.”
“Their illicit affair is the motivation behind disposing of the spouses.”
“I might believe that if Charles Bradford and Adele Kazanov were suspected of their spouses’
deaths, but I will keep an open mind.” Amadeus stood to leave. “If you will excuse me, Lowing, I need
to mend fences.”
Thirty minutes later, Amadeus arrived at Bradford House. He climbed the stairs and banged on the
door, all the while wondering the most expedient way to assuage Ginger’s anger.
Desmond Pickles opened the door and looked down his long nose at the constable. “Deliveries in the
rear.” The majordomo started to close the door again.
Amadeus placed his booted foot in the door jamb to prevent it. “I have no deliveries, as you well
know.”
Pickles stared at the offending booted foot until the constable retracted it. “How may I help you?”
“I want to speak with Ginger Evans.”
“Do you have an appointment?”
Amadeus narrowed his gaze on the old codger, who refused to be intimidated.
